Purpose

The Climate Change Coordinator serves under the general supervision of the County Executive as Dane County’s liaison to municipal governments, businesses, non-profits, and other entities coordinating and developing programs to adapt to climate change and reduce local climate change emissions. This position has responsibility for planning, organizing, developing, and implementing an external facing county-wide climate change action plan through the County Executive’s Dane County Climate Change Action Council. This position is responsible for raising public awareness of Dane County’s response to climate change.

Function

Plans, organizes, and coordinates the activities of the Dane County Climate Change Action Council; meets with stakeholder organizations; prepares budget; evaluates and develops policies, strategies and programs to reduce climate change emissions; oversees public relations and promotional activities with respect to Dane County’s climate change actions; represents to the public Dane County’s actions with respect to climate change; provides technical assistance to individuals and organizations; tracks and monitors progress with respect to reducing emissions; coordinates actions with other county departments; coordinates opportunities with the Sustainability Coordinator.

Prerequisites

Education and Experience: Requires training/education or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, urban planning, environmental studies, communication, public relations, or another relevant field. Three years professional experience related to climate change and utility and energy sector project and portfolio management or related field. Preferred candidates will have: Management and/or equivalent experience with emphasis placed on public relations and collaboration with stakeholder groups. Experience developing, directing and leading a strategic work plan for a large organization. Experience facilitating discussions and constructively presenting to audiences with competing or conflicting goals, priorities, and perspectives. Experience handling publicly sensitive information. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Independent initiative, judgment, and diplomatic skill; considerable knowledge of the Dane County community; knowledge of state and local history; knowledge and skill in the dynamics necessary for effective organization and team building; effective oral and written communication skills; ability to establish and sustain effective working relationships with diverse populations including businesses, other municipal governments, advocacy groups, local colleges and universities, news media, and general public. Ability to plan, manage and coordinate the development of major policies and initiatives, some of which may be sensitive. Knowledge of theories, principles, and processes of program planning and evaluation. Knowledge of strategic planning principles and methods. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and access to personal transportation.

Compensation

Starting annual salary of $77,043.20 with further increases to $99,528.00, plus excellent benefits including fully paid dental and HMO health insurance premiums for full time employees. The County will also provide contributions towards POS health insurance premiums, retirement, and short/long term disability. Additional benefits available include long term care, vision coverage, flex spending account and deferred compensation programs paid in full by the employee.
