Job Description



Dane County Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin is seeking a full time Veterinary Technician. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide animal care for a large and diverse zoological collection and closely monitor health and behavior. This position will also perform zoo keeper duties necessary to ensure the health, care and maintenance of zoo animals and the cleaning and maintenance of zoo enclosures, buildings and grounds. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibles list and may be considered for other part time and full time vacancies as they occur during the next six months. Requires a two (2) year associate degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) – accredited college and two (2) years of paid experience in the care and maintenance of zoo specimens at an AZA accredited or related facility within the last (3) years. Two years of coursework in zoological or closely related field may be substituted for one year of experience. Other combinations of education, training and/or experience that provide an equivalent background may also be considered.  Additional credit will be given for further education in zoology, animal care or closely related field. This position is active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling). Must be able to repeatedly lift up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance. Must have the ability to use hands and feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment. A valid Wisconsin Driver's License (or eligibility for) is required.  Must be available for work on nights, weekends, holidays and emergencies and perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Starting hourly wage is $20.54 with further merit increases to $22.50, longevity pay of 3% to 12% of base salary and excellent benefits.
